Knowledge Management Strategy and Action Plan for the Healthy Start in Life Programme of Save the Children USA

To establish a strong KM framework which would be informed by programme activities and lessons learned, we conducted a detailed assessment of the existing KM landscape within the programme and across the organisation, and developed focused KM Strategy and Implementation Plan.

Project duration:
February – July 2023

Background and purpose of the assignment

Save the Children believes every child deserves a future. When its founder, Eglantyne Jebb, saw children dying of starvation and wracked with disease after the end of the First World War in 1919, she launched the Save the Children Fund to raise much-needed funds to end children’s suffering across war-torn Europe.

Today, over 100 years later, Save the Children works in the United States and around the world to give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. When crisis strikes and children are most vulnerable, Save the Children is always among the first to respond and the last to leave. We do whatever it takes for children – every day and in times of crisis – transforming their lives and the future we share.

The Department of Global Health (DGH) at Save the Children USA define Knowledge Management (KM) as a systematic cycle of capturing, synthesising, storing, and disseminating knowledge and learning for future programmatic use and improved organisational performance.

The DGH seeks a KM consultant to develop this Strategy and Implementation Plan, which will be informed by activities and lessons learned during implementation of ‘Healthy Start in Life’ strategy activities to date and previous KM strategies. The consultant will work closely with staff from the core strategy teams, as well as the DGH knowledge management team to finalise the Healthy Start in Life Strategy and Implementation Plan.

What we delivered

Working closely with the Senior Advisor, Knowledge Management, at the Department of Global Health, our team of consultants delivered the following services:

  • Reviewed strategic materials and summary of discussions around KM needs for priority area.
  • Developed and rolled out a survey among programme staff to fill gaps in data and gain a better understanding of the programme and its KM needs.
  • Hosted interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with identified stakeholders to gain additional insights and evaluate objectives.
  • Drafted and presented a KM Strategy to programme leadership, incorporated feedback following consultations, and submitted a finalised Strategy.
  • Developed a detailed 2-year Implementation Plan by priority areas aligned with the KM Strategy.
  • Developed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the achievement of set objectives.
  • Provided final guidance in launching the KM Strategy and Implementation Plan, ensuring their understanding and buy-in.

“The team at Consult KM was very knowledgeable on sector best practices and challenges, flexible with shifts in our project timeframe due to staffing challenges, and overall, really nice to work with.”
