Background and purpose of the assignment
Founded in April 2017, The Christian Community Healthcare Foundation-Kenya (COHECF-KENYA) is a non-sectarian, not-for-profit organisation headquartered in Kitale, Kenya. Our organisation was born out of a deep-seated commitment to address the pressing challenges our communities face—challenges that hinder sustainable development and overall well-being. We recognised that to empower our communities truly, we needed to tackle these issues head-on through a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of poverty, inequality, and conflict.
COHECF-KENYA was established by a group of dedicated individuals who had witnessed firsthand the struggles of underserved populations in accessing necessities such as healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. We saw the need for a community-driven approach to development that would meet immediate needs and lay the foundation for long-term growth and resilience. Our founders understood that sustainable development requires more than temporary relief; it demands a comprehensive strategy that empowers people to take charge of their futures. This belief drives our work today as we build on our five key pillars: Health, Education, Peace, Economic Empowerment, and Agriculture.
To increase the visibility of the organisation’s work and its impact, and to raise the necessary funds to continue its activities, COHECF-KENYA was looking to use visual storytelling, specifically photography, to tell the stories of young women and the impact the organisation’s work has made in their lives.
What we delivered
Working closely with the Executive Director of COHECF-KENYA and his team, our photographer delivered the following services:
- Traveled to Kitale, Kenya to meet the COHECF-KENYA team and capture stories of young women whom the organisation serves.
- Developed interview questions and conducted interviews with 6 women, as well as the local priest. Informed consent obtained prior to interviews. Interviewed the COHECF-KENYA team to better understand the problem, community needs, and their work.
- Took photographs of the women and recorded the interviews using own professional photo and video equipment.
- Took photographs of the activities of COHECF-KENYA such as vocational training courses for women (tailoring, hairdressing, gardening, and others).
- Pre-selected and edited the photographs for further dissemination.
- Drafted a story based on the interviews and general information about the organisation and the project.
- In consultation with COHECF-KENYA and Consult KM International, revised and finalised the story for publishing and dissemination among potential donors.
“I really loved the quality of work done by Consult KM International on our project. The organization conducted a professional session with the young mothers in an environment where they were free to share their past leading to motherhood.
Young organizations like COHECF-KENYA do not have the funding to be able to afford the services of Consult KM but out of their own will, they came to support our Young Mothers Project to help us get the story out there.
We say thank you so much! ASANTE SANA.”
— Michael Ochieng Nyawino, Executive Director, COHECF-KENYA
